OUR HISTORY

THE BEGINNING

Independent Environments, Inc. was founded in Eugene, Oregon, 1979, and opened its first residence in 1982. At the time, there were no housing options in the Lane County, Oregon area for adults with physical disabilities. Our first home was state-of-the-art since it was designed to meet the needs of 8 people with physical disabilities, who also experienced intellectual and developmental disabilities. IEI was created thanks to a group of dedicated parents, who worked diligently with the University of Oregon and the Department of Housing and Urban Development to procure funding in order to build a home for their loved ones with developmental disabilities.

OUR GROWTH

Independent Environments, Inc. now oversees 11 homes across the neighborhoods of Eugene supporting 31 people total. IEI supports an even more broad spectrum of people who experience developmental disabilities along with sensory and/or physical disabilities all thanks to our continuously expanding and compassionate team!
